Stargate Universe Review

I’m trying, I really am but have to say I am really struggling to get into the new incarnation of Stargate, Stargate Universe. While trying not to give away too many spoilers, SGU is the second spin off of the original Stargate series, SG1. This ran for 10 years and won more awards than I could even list. The second, Stargate Atlantis, started well and then got canned after 5 seasons. (there’s the first clue!).

By dialing the mysterious 9th chevron of the Stargate, an illequiped team of soldiers and civilians find themselves hurled to the other side of the universe, only to find themselves on a technologically advanced yet ancient spaceship called Destiny. It is very advanced, yet was launched 100’s of thousands of years ago and is on the verge of falling apart.

This is where SGU starts to lose its way a little. The Stargate devices from the series allow near instantaneous travel from one point in space to another within the galaxy, so we should be used to characters zooming all over the place in the series. Once the Destiny charges up all of it’s batteries, which I am sure the characters will learn to do – then you would have thought they’d be on their way home to Earth.

Instead, we have a series that is half Star Trek Voyager, half Battlestar Galactica. People struggling to get home from the other side of the galaxy / universe in an aging space ship. When compring SGU to either of these shows, it comes up very short.

Based on US TV rule of thumb, give SGU 7 years and they will find their way home. But for now, keep an eye out for any two parters or season finale’s – I’d imagine they’d be the best episodes of this series.

But I might be wrong…

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan

Unbelievably, it has been 6 months since Battlestar Galactica finished with the triple part episode ‘Daybreak’.

Back, before the show finished, indeed, before the second half of the final series even finished, we started hearing rumours of a straight to DVD movie being released once the series had wrapped up.

Well, that time is only 5 weeks away when “The Plan” comes out on DVD. I was digging through the old Basketcase archives (my first attempt at a blog) and came across this, my first post on the matter – ahh, fond memories.

A new trailer (well, as of 3 months ago anyway) is out on YouTube but well worth watching to get yourself in the mood for its release…

Stargate Universe Trailer

Well, it has been a few months since I last wrote a post and am a little disappointed with myself to be honest. Still, in that time I have gotten into, and watched a new TV series whch I never really enjoyed before: Stargate SG1 and Stargate Atlantis

Stargate SG1 (I’m going with the massively cut down synopsis and assuming you no nothing here) follows on from the movie, released in the min 90’s, of how an alien device, called a stargate, allows near instantaneous travel throughout the Milky Way.

Along they way, the team make new friends and enemies and over time, pick up new technology and ultimately there own (small!) fleet of starships.

Stargate Atlantis was the first spin off where the group behind SG!, known as Stargate Command, set up a base in a city in another galaxy (a little like Star Trek DS9). For more information on the showsas well as a place to read up on the different episodes, I’d suggest a read of this site: Gateworld

Stargate Universe is the second spin off and is coming to our screens early next month. Here is the trailer for the new show, which, even if you’re not a Stargate fan, looks pretty amazing! Let me know what you think…

”V” TV Pilot Preview

So, another year and another 80’s TV show is due for a remake. Do you remember V? I should introduce this as a new identity initiative, if you remember 80s TV the first time round, then you are very much over the age of 18. I’m still reeling when someone I worked with asked what the fuss was all about when the first Transformers movie came out, she didn’t know it was born out of a 20+ year old cartoon. Anyway I digress…

V – for those of you who may not know (and I had to look it up to remind myself on Wiki so don’t be ashamed), premiered in 1984 and featured a race of advanced, human looking aliens coming to Earth offering peace and prosperity. Obviously, there was a twist and before you knew it, it turns out that the aliens are actually reptile-esque humanoids who want to dominate the human race while eating the odd live rat from time to time (sorry to put you off your lunch!) As with Starsky & Hutch, Charlie’s Angels and Knight Rider before it, the series has been reborn for the 21st Century…

Below is the new premier which seems to have snuck onto the world stage, well YouTube at least with a minimal of publicity. Featuring Juliette from LOST (what she does for a living isn’t really clear) and a selection of other TV actors (the bloke from the 4400 and even the less successful actor brother from A Party of Five – but don’t quote me on that!). It certainly looks good though the start reminded me of Independence Day SOO much that I was expecting Will Smith to pop up smoking a cigar.

Due for an early 2010 release, this new show will go toe to toe with the final series of LOST – good luck with that one fellas!

Anyway – sit back, relax and enjoy! I’d like to know what you think…

Topgear Bugatti Veyron Vs McLaren F1

Surely the ultimate drag race between two of the best cars in the world. Shown on Topgear last Sunday, this is the showdown between the best car from the 20th century vs the best of the 21st.

As I’m rapidly approaching middle age, and the fact that I still own a Scalextrix version – I was cheering for the McLaren.

Start your engines!

LOST’s Smoke Monster to get its own TV Show!

Oohh yes, that’s right folks, the infamous smoke monster from LOST has been given it’s own spin off show. Now despite this being posted on an American news site called ‘The Onion’ saying that this has been confirmed by ABC executives, I’m a little dubious.

Poor Mr Eko, remember him? Well he got slapped 7 ways from Sunday back in Season 3 (I think! But hopefully someone will correct me if I’m wrong) by ‘Smokey’, my nickname not ABC’s and has been spotted occasionally through the seasons, most recently when it talked to Ben in the secret underground lair, sorry got all Dr Evil then, I mean temple.

Who knows, will just have to wait and see hey! For the full story, peel away the layers of The Onion here.

Fringe Season 2 Teaser

Last night on Sky One was the two part season finale of Fringe. Now if you haven’t seen or heard much about Fringe, I highly recommend watching it. It’s along the same sort of lines as X-Files was in it’s prime but a lot more intense and generally well, better.

You can read about the first series to your hearts content here…

In order to keep this as spoiler free as possible considering this only just came out, I’ll refrain from saying any more but the teaser for the second season has been released and here it is

LOST Season 6 Teaser

Well. What an episode the Season 5 two part finale was! I have a love/hate relationship with LOST and sometimes wish I hadn’t started watching it in the first place but last night was an absolute beauty!

We left the show with poor Juliette at the bottom of the well smashing a nuclear warhead with a rock (in any other show that would be a bit odd but not with LOST. A blinding white flash and then…..

Screaming at the TV shouting NOOOO!!

Well, the final season, Destiny Calls may be 8 months away but a teaser has already been released. It’s not long and if you blink you’ll miss it but presenting in all it’s glory…

Caprica Pilot Episode Review

7
May
0

I watched the pilot episode for Caprica on the plane to and from Switzerland last weekend and wanted to jot down a review to share what I thought of the 2 hour show. I’ve been a big fan of the reimagined Battlestar Galactica show – just look at my tag cloud if you don’t believe me… And I have to say, while I was expecting the raw ‘guns and space battles’ from BSG – this spin off really isn’t half bad…

Caprica is set 58 Years Before The Fall of the 12 Colonies, is the prequel to the reimagined Battlestar Galactica series. This is the story of how humanity came to create Artificial Intelligence and set itself on a path to near annihilation. Caprica has long been billed as a change of pace from its gritty, militant predecessor, and as I mentioned above, the series certainly has an entirely different look and feel – immediately obvious in the opening minutes where there are a couple of topless 20 something girls dancing about (I’m not sure if the old lady sitting next to me on the plane noticed this or not!). Overall though, Caprica isn’t a million miles away from BSG where it matters most: the way in which character interrelationships are portrayed. Make no mistake, this is a grand (space) opera. And that’s exactly what the opening episode drives home.

First things first, though. With all the fuzzy continuity of BSG, it’s better if you just try not to think about how this all fits in with BSG. For better or worse, in order for Caprica to work as a series, it needs to be taken on face value, as its own entity, with only minor and minimal connections to the events of The Fall and subsequent Exodus of humanity. What is worth noting, however, is how Caprica attempts to explain how and why the Cylons became so rooted in their belief of a One God, as opposed to the Colonial Polytheism. This comes by way of the Pilot Episode’s most pivotal character: a teenage girl, named Zoe.

Zoe is your typical rebellious , except for one very important thing: she’s a fantastically gifted computer programmer – a prodigy who has managed to artificially replicate the human identity (but considering she is 17 at a push, makes me think the only other person who could show the same level of wow, would be Dougie Houser M.D.). What’s most intriguing is the question: If you replicate a personality, do you also replicate the spirit, the soul of the individual? This, along with theological tensions in the episode lead to the best, most sophisticated elements of the series. At its heart, Caprica wants to be an exploration of the human equation and based on the pilot the series is off to an excellent start.

Two families, the Greystones and the Adams are thrown together following an attack and brings to life the question, just because we can do something, does this mean we should do something?

What was really interesting for me were a few distinct elements [SPOILER WARNING]:

1. The colonies don’t exist in the way we thought of them in BSG. A few of them are mentioned by name but they are not united under a single banner and there is a great deal of discrimination between the rich and poorer colonies.

2. Yes – we do get to meet a young William Adama. But no, he doesn’t have a model of Galactica hanging from his bedroom ceiling – presumably because it hasn’t been built yet.

3. Cylons… We’ll I’ll leave it to you to watch the pilot as I don’t want to spoil anything As for the sci-fi elements of the series, there’s not a whole lot of new ground here. The holographic programming which pervades many of the episode’s scenes is like a strange mixture of The Matrix and Star Trek’s Holodeck. The idea (and dangers) of creating “life” is certainly not a new topic of exploration. Nor is the discussion of whether or not Zoe’s avatar is a real life – again, Trek has a long history of exploring what it means for unusual entities to have life.

In the end, Caprica hooked me enough to deserve a closer look once the series finally ramps up and gets going. However if you’re looking for something to fill the void left by BSG, you’ll likely be disappointed. In fact, I’m not precisely sure exactly what audience this particular series is aiming for. Also, considering Ronald D. Moore’s haphazard way of crafting the BSG story, viewers here need to be especially wary of any long-term continuity – which is a distinct liability at the beginning of a series.

On the whole, I’d give this a well earned 8/10…
